Daguerreotype Wins in Photo Review Competition
26 Jun. 2003
A quarter-plate daguerreotype from Mike Robinson and Spring Hurlbut's recent series The Visitation has been awarded a second prize in the 2003 Photo Review International Competition. This respected competition was juried by Bill Hunt, director of photography at Ricco/Maresca Gallery NYC. This year's submissions reached almost 3,500 photographs, with only one first prize, five second prizes and five third prizes being awarded. Historians take note: To my knowledge, this is the first daguerreotype to take prizes in a major photo competition since the 1850s.
Winners of the Photo Review contest are to be shown at Philadelphia's University of the Arts this fall. The Visitation series (including the prize-winning plate) can also be seen in Toronto at Sable Castelli Gallery's Summer group exhibition (mid-July through August). In addition, the prize-winners will be illustrated in the Summer 2003 Photo Review.
The Photo Review and its companion publication The Photograph Collector are widely-read publications for the art photography market which I can highly recommend. For subscription information visit
the Photo Review website.
Copies of the Photo Review contest number will be available from the publisher for $7, or

if you are an existing customer of Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs.
For other plates from the Visitation series, see news article of 03/29/03.
